SuperYacht Gallery – London

May 27,2017

We speak to Merijn de Waard and Marijn Smit, the founders and curators of the inaugural edition of the SuperYacht Gallery which will take place in London from the 1-3rd June 2017

SYM: To start with, can you please explain the concept of the SuperYacht Gallery a little for us?

SG: Yes, of course. The SuperYacht Gallery is the first ever international yacht event to be presented in a gallery format. We are bringing together the world’s leading authorities from the yachting and luxury lifestyle industries for an exciting three-day event of VIP and public programming at the renowned Saatchi Gallery in London. The event will be presented in a multi-media format and the exhibits will include photography, commissioned art works and sculpture, film, models, design objects, sound installations and tasting sessions. Additionally, we will also be hosting a series of daily seminars plus a unique 180° cinema experience presented by Breed Media which will give visitors a glimpse into the world of superyachting.

SYM: Where did the inspiration for the SuperYacht Gallery come from?

SG: Well, having worked in the superyacht industry for many years, we wanted to move away from the traditional trade fair or yachting showroom and create a new and exciting event accessible to visitors using the format of an art exhibition. We also wanted to give current and prospective superyacht owners an unparalleled level of access to the commission, design and construction phases in the lifecycle of a superyacht, and present technical details and facts & figures about the yachting industry in a more artistic format.

SYM: What are the themes for the different galleries?

SG: The exhibition will be made up of 7 different galleries incorporating various visual elements and creative concepts. Each of the galleries has its own theme, and will take visitors on an exciting journey through the superyacht world and beyond. The exhibition begins on the ground floor where visitors will be introduced to the world of yachting and learn how the most luxurious superyachts

on the planet start life as simple sketches on a blank piece of paper. Then the second floor is where visitors can explore the superyacht lifestyle around the world, with galleries showcasing what a unique experience owning or chartering a superyacht really is. The galleries are laid out as follows:

SYM: Why did you decide to hold the exhibition in London?

SG: We wanted to bring the exhibition to both existing superyacht owners and prospective owners. London is a captivating and cosmopolitan city with a long maritime history and strong links to the yachting industry. And we also felt that the world-famous Saatchi Gallery was the perfect fit to host this type of event.

SYM: You’ve partnered with several luxury brands for this event, will you also be showcasing the superyacht lifestyle?

SG: Yes, the exhibition will cover not just superyachts, but also the lifestyles of select superyacht owners. In the Lifestyle Gallery, we will be featuring luxury products used onboard superyachts including bed linens, tableware and other soft furnishings. Our partners include well-known companies such as Lalique, D. Porthault, J.L. Coquet, and Hennessy and we believe that they will be able to provide a rare glimpse into the yachting lifestyle for visitors to the gallery.

SYM: Who is the event aimed at specifically?

SG: The exposition is aimed at both current and prospective superyacht owners. We wish to
welcome visitors who want to learn about the brands or the business of superyachts, and also those who are there simply to look for inspiration.

SYM: You’re holding seminars throughout the exhibition for your guests. Who can visitors expect to hear from during the 3 days?

SG: Some of the most important names in the industry will be joining us for the 3-day programme of seminars and discussion panels. From the world’s leading yacht designers to some of the biggest European shipyards, we have a full programme with lots of exciting topics and guest speakers. Design studios Winch Design, Terence Disdale Design and Claydon Reeves will be heading up the discussions on Thursday 1ST June along with the Rossinavi, Nobiskrug and Balk Shipyards. Friday 2nd June’s all-star panel will be made up of Luerssen, Espen Oeino International and Edmiston, while Heesen Yachts and Baglietto will also be making an appearance in the afternoon. The final day of the exhibition sees a discussion about social media with TheYachtGuy plus guest speakers before top Dutch and Italian shipyards Amels and Benetti take to the floor. We hope that this varied and international programme will present our visitors with an exclusive insight into the world’s leading designers, shipyards and luxury brands.
