Damen Yachting History

Amels is a renowned Dutch shipyard that has a rich history spanning over 100 years. Founded in 1918, the company started out as a shipyard and repair facility, serving the commercial and naval sectors. Amels also built wooden fishing boats and steel tugboats, to kickstart their fortune. In the 1970s, Amels began to focus on the luxury yacht market and quickly established itself as a leader in the industry, known for its expertise in the design and construction of high-end yachts, starting with yacht KATALINA.

Over the years, Amels has continued to evolve and expand, introducing new innovations and technologies to the yacht building process. In the 1990s, the company became part of the Damen Shipyards Group, which allowed it to access even greater resources and expertise to further improve its yacht building capabilities.

One of Amels’ signature achievements was the development of its Limited Editions Range, a series of semi-custom yachts that offer owners the opportunity to personalise their yacht with unique features and specifications. The Limited Editions Range has been extremely popular, with many of these yachts being delivered to customers around the world.

Today, Amels continues to lead the way in the luxury yacht market, delivering exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and customer service. With a talented team of designers, engineers, and shipbuilding experts, the company is well-positioned to continue its legacy of innovation and excellence in the years to come.

Damen Yachting Family Practices

For generations, Damen Yachting have built incredible superyachts for those with a supreme taste for luxury, class, and brilliant engineering. They deliver quality ships for private and charter use and seek to always emulate their core values of excellence, trust, craftsmanship, tradition, sustainability, and teamwork.

In 2024, the Damen Yachting family continue to serve their intended purpose. For more than 100 years they have been running their family business of building yachts. They’ve aimed to pass down as much knowledge as possible from generation to generation in order to keep their integrity up and expertise sharp. Rose Damen, a third generation family shareholder and Managing Director of Damen Yachting supports this notion, “It’s very important that we have hands-on family involvement in our yachting business, reflecting our family values there – especially as our clients are often family business owners as well.”

Damen Yachting x Blue World Technologies Collaboration

As much success as Damen Yachting has seen, their family has no plans to stop any time soon. As such, their current goal lies in their dream of becoming the world’s most sustainable shipbuilder.

They’re certainly well on their way. In fact, Damen Yachting and Blue World Technologies have recently signed onto a long-term strategic collaboration with one another. Blue World Technologies works as a cell manufacturer to provide methanol fuel cell components and systems as an eco-friendly alternative to combustion and diesel. They are especially notable for their work with the maritime industry, making their collaboration with Damen Yachting a highly anticipated one.

Not only will they work to support ocean conservation, but they will furthermore ensure shipowners reap benefits from lower fuel consumption and minimised operational costs.

Damen Yachting Shipyards

Damen Yachting are proud to operate an impressive 36 shipyards around the world, contributing to the employment of over 12,000 individuals. Their shipyards are located in the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, Romania, Belgium, Brazil, China, France, Indonesia, Cuba, Qatar, South Africa, Ukraine, Singapore, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and the United Kingdom. While every shipyard brings something unique and important to the Damen Yachting network of shipyards, there are a few locations that are arguably their most significant.

Vlissingen City

This is one of two locations in the municipality of Vlissingen (Flushing) in the Netherlands. It is where their global yachting head office is located and the home of Amels superyachts. They have built over 100 Amels superyachts, which are their flagship brand and known for being timeless classics. These vessels incorporate Dutch innovation and raise the bar for superyachts even further upwards. Up to 11 yacht projects can take place at once here, with covered facilities up to 204 metres long. There are many moving parts here, up to 1,500 individuals can work here at once. This dock has direct access to the deepwater North Sea, if desired.

Vlissingen East

Vlissingen East (Vlissingen Oost) is neighbors with their Vlissingen City Shipyard. Their set up allows for afloat repairs with the support of their floating dock. What’s more is their 215-metre covered drydock can even accommodate the world’s largest yacht.

Gdynia

This shipyard, founded in 1991 and adjacent to the Baltic Sea, is located in Gdynia, Poland. The Damen Gdynia shipyard can handle vessels up to 900 tonnes and was established as one of the first private shipyards in Poland. This dock spotlights fine Polish shipbuilding techniques, plus cooperates with dozens of local Polish companies, as well as some foreign ones. This location focuses on Amels hull building and has covered facilities that reach 84 metres in length.

Antalya

For over a decade, Damen Yachting has been operating out of Antalya, Turkey and has grown dramatically in that period. Their production rate is already 28x what it was their opening year and this growth is not slowing down. In total, Damen Antalya has produced 168 ships, covering a diverse range of 22 ship types. This location is one of the most important yacht building hubs in Turkey. This shipyard aims to support Turkey’s economy; as a result over 1,000 Turkish companies have been hired for supplies and contributions. This includes a mix of companies, everything from electrical engineers to catering.

Galati

Incredibly, this historic shipyard site has been in operation on the banks of the Danube River in Romania since the 1400’s, while the Galati yard began operating there in 1893, recently reaching a milestone of 130 years. In 1999, they became a part of Damen Yachting Shipyards, although their collaboration first started a few years earlier in 1994. Today, the yard is one of the largest production sites in the Damen Group, employing over 4,000 people who have delivered over 500 vessels on their massive 45 hectare site.
